Booker Lowe Gallery, featuring contemporary Aboriginal fine art from Australia, is one of only a handful of American art spaces dedicated to Aboriginal fine art.

The gallery offers highly-collectible and affordable works by emerging artists from throughout Australia, including the Central and Western Desert. Works include museum-quality bark paintings, ceremonial poles, carvings, paintings, and works on paper from Arnhem Land. There are also ironwood carvings and paintings in natural ochres by artists from the Tiwi Islands.

The Aboriginal art movement began in the 1970s when the Aboriginal people, the world's oldest living culture, was encouraged to share their pictorial traditions with the "outside world" by painting their stories, complex creation myths or "dreamings," and more on canvas. The Native Australians, inhabiting Australia for more than 40,000 years before Europeans, developed hundreds of languages, passing information from generation to generation through elaborate ceremonies, including story-telling, singing, dancing, body painting and adornment, and creating designs on cave walls.

Gallery Hours:
