In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’d like to spotlight a place that celebrates the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in The U.S. and that place is, Asia Society Texas Center.
With 14 locations throughout the world, Asia Society is the leading educational organization promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among the peoples, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the West. Asia Society Texas Center executes the global mission with a local focus, enriching and engaging the vast diversity of Houston through innovative, relevant programs in arts and culture, business and policy, education, and community outreach.
Typically, you can visit Tuesday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. with admission of $5 - $8. Their building, exhibitions, and Pondi Café will remain closed until further notice but there are still tons of way to stay engaged with them through their FREE online programming. They’re offering so many great online programs for families, art lovers, music fans, and more! Asia Society Texas Center has something for every taste & every age! “Weekly Webcast” every Thursday evening you too can join in on a webcast focused on a particular COVID angles like the Houston Med Center, anti-Asian racism, mental health and more. Weeks prior, they discussed the economic impact with award-winning MSNBC commentator Ali Velshi, who went off-script and showed the audience the TV cameras set up in his living room so MSNBC can broadcast his show there. It was a pretty neat "behind the curtain" moment.
“At-Home Adventures Through Asia” family-fun lesson plan spotlights a different Asian country each week. So far, they’ve covered Indonesia, India, Korea, Japan, China, and Vietnam. With so many parents working remotely while trying to keep their kids academically engaged, they wanted to offer FREE ways for kids to learn about Asian foods, traditions, art, geography, and school life, all from the convenience of their device. Some favorites are: hands-on lessons on how to create origami, a water buffalo mask, a lotus lantern, and a taeguk! Also known as Korean drums. Each week, there are pdf's and videos and all of the craft supplies are easy things families probably already have at home. Download & start having fun!
"Friday Favorites" Staff Picks a great selection of Asian-related film, books, TV shows, music, and podcasts. There's even an in-depth weekly Deep Dive on a different topic like, Bollywood, dance, and indie music just to name a few but there’s more coming every Friday!
