Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack

Serious barbecue doesn’t require fancy plates or modern décor – just a pittmaster with skills. And at Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack, they serve serious barbecue. Nestled next to a gas station on Old Spanish Trail, the casual dining spot may not be much on the eyes, but your taste buds are in for a treat. Once inside, you’ll find consistent lines of hungry regulars and a friendly staff.

The family-owned business has been dishing out hickory-smoked meats by the pound in South Houston since 1985. Co-owner and official ‘pittmaster’ Rayford “Ray” Busch retired his Harris County Sheriff’s badge for an apron in order to share the old-fashioned cooking they grew up with in Houston.

What began as a simple food truck turned brick-and-mortar thanks to high demand. Menu items like baby back ribs, fried corn on the cob (a must order), and the Big Herb Burger (stuffed with chopped beef, bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce) keep patrons lining up for more. And don’t forget a homemade personal sized Sock it To Me Cake for dessert on the way out.
